Introducing our “Snider Shoutout” series! We’ll be featuring awesome individuals and small businesses that we think you should know about!
For our first installment, I had the pleasure of interviewing my good friend and client, the very talented Lizzie Green. I have had the pleasure of watching this bad-ass mama build her incredible business from the ground up and could not be prouder. We experienced her talent first-hand when she designed our primary bathroom remodel a couple years ago! Excited to share her with you all!
Lizzie is the owner and principal designer of Popix Designs, a Los Angeles based interior design firm. Lizzie is a mother, a wife, and an interior designer. She focuses on residential renovations, interior design and interior styling. Lizzie’s California style encompasses a blend of Scandinavian and contemporary design. With a focus on quality, a love for vintage, and her attention to detail, Lizzie instills her own personal style into every project, while keeping her clients vision and style in mind.
Thank you so much for doing this with us! Before we dig in, could you tell us a bit about your background and what brought you to interior design?
My first college degree was in Kinesiology, however I quickly realized that science was not my passion, and I needed to be doing something more creative for a career. I then got my second degree from FIDM in Visual Communications where I took drafting courses, learned how to sketch properly, and learned many computer programs that I use to this day for interior design. It was after renovating our first home and fixer-upper when I really fell in love with interior design. I briefly worked for another interior designer before I went out on my own. I started designing homes for friends and family while I built a solid portfolio. Fast forward 3 1/2 years later, and I am working on multi-million dollar custom homes for some very cool and exclusive clients :)
What is your favorite design trend at the moment? What is your least favorite?
I’m loving anything stone or marble right now. From coffee tables, to countertops, I’m all in! I’m currently installing a bunch of different colored marble tiles in my office and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Marble is classic, and forever, but it’s definitely trending right now, and more and more people are using it in their kitchens and bathrooms as opposed to the past. My least favorite trend would probably be the modern farmhouse trend. If you live on a farm, wonderful, let's embrace that style. If not, let’s find an interior design style that compliments the architecture of your home.
How would you describe your design style / aesthetic?
I find it hard to put my style into words, because I tend to gravitate towards many different styles. I think each project tends to look a little different depending on the client. But if I had to choose, I would say my style is a blend of Scandinavian and Contemporary design. I love vintage, and I love unique pieces of furniture. When clients let me, I love to incorporate an element of surprise. Whether that be a pop of color, or a piece of furniture from a different time period, I find something unexpected is usually what sets a space apart from the norm.
What is your favorite architectural style and why?
I’m always a sucker for a true mid-century modern home. I naturally gravitate towards modern architecture with clean lines. But that’s not to say I would turn down renovating a Spanish bungalow. I love a good challenge, and leaning into the style of a home.
What do you think makes you / your company stand out?
We strive to think outside the box, and give our clients a truly unique design. Whether that’s playing with color, or exploring unique vintage furniture, we don’t want every project to look the same.
What exciting projects are you working on?
I’m wrapping up a really special mid-century modern remodel in Brentwood. We are incorporating a lot of custom designs and vintage furniture. For example, we found a really cool vintage curvy sectional that we had reupholstered in a fun patterned fabric, and we are having a custom organic shaped mirror made in three different stained mirror colors. It’s definitely going to be unique! Another fun project I am working on at the moment is a full home remodel in Santa Monica, where I am designing every single inch of the home from tile, to kitchen design, to furniture, to a custom pool. It’s going to truly be a one of a kind home!
Have you read any books, listened to any podcasts, or watched any shows / movies / documentaries that you’ve enjoyed lately? Tell us about them!
I love a good coffee table book. One of my favorites is Architectural Digest. Not only does it look good on any given coffee table, but the inside of the book is filled with some of the world’s most inspiring homes! I also love a good podcast; my go-to’s right now are Smartness hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. They basically interview a new famous person every week, but they are so witty doing it. With constant banter back and forth, it’s hard not to tune in every week. I also love the podcast Design Time, by Domino Magazine. They discuss insider tricks, and interview some of the leaders in the design industry. It’s always interesting, and I’m always learning from it.
What are 3 of your favorite places/ things to do in Los Angeles?
I love exploring the Mart Collective. It’s an antique and vintage store in Venice, with so many hidden treasures. I never leave empty handed. I also love going hiking! When the weather permits, my family and I try to go hiking every weekend. Some of my favorite hikes are The Grotto and Escondido falls which are both located in Malibu. Both hikes are best enjoyed shortly after it rains, so you can witness the epic waterfalls. I also love the Proper hotel in Santa Monica, and although I haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying a staycation there yet, I love going there for drinks, food, and to enjoy the beautiful ambiance. It is designed by Kelly Wearstler, who is my favorite interior designer. Every inch of that hotel is thoughtfully curated, and furnished with loads of vintage furniture. Forever a favorite!
